And so I begin my first graphic novel. I must say going into this I assumed that the pictures would merely slow down my reading and that I would be unable to focus on the plot and details that are happening in the book. But I find that the pictures do not bog me down as expected, but rather they make me read faster. However, this increased speed is beginning to make me wonder if I am missing some of the key factors of the story due to just skipping over them.
I almost prefer reading graphic novels the more I read into Persepolis. It feels as if I do not have to think about what the writer is trying to actually say to us and I can see what they mean. With this graphic novel I could merely look at the picture and still understand the concept of what the author is saying.
I've found that I really like the pictures. It makes the book much less boring than reading a normal book. I also don't have to try to imagine all the stuff happening because it just illustrates it for me.
ReplyDeleteI thought that too, at first. I figured that I was just speeding through this, and I didn't really know if I was getting any real reading accomplished. After getting this far into the book, though, I think I am. I'm really gaining an emotional attachment for Marji, and I'm getting affected by her sadness. When something bad happens, I feel really awful for her; likewise, when something good happens, I'm happy. It's weird that somehow this book (with a different style than I've ever read before) has gotten me this hooked after reading so little.
ReplyDeleteexactly! I find it so much easier to read then having to read 7 pages to get out a description. It makes it more enjoyable to read for sure! :)
ReplyDeleteI agree. I am a super super slow reader but i find that i have been reading through this rather fast and the pictures really do help and i agree, i hate figuring out the REAl meaning by reading b/n the lines but rather Marjane paints the picture when telling us.
ReplyDeletePersepolis was a pretty fast read. I did get caught up in the words though and didn't pay attention to the pictures as much as I should have. I really like that we got to do a graphic novel. It's interesting and just different in general.
